The best way to determine if you have indoor air quality problems and what specific problems you have is to get your indoor air quality tested. These tests are easy to perform and can tell you what is in your air, so you know what you need to eliminate to breathe better at home.
You should test several areas of your home, to make sure you get an even sample and to raise your chances of picking up on a pollutant that might only be present in certain spaces in the house.
Once you know what you’re dealing with, you have a number of options for improving your indoor air quality.
Older insulation contains more chemical compounds that can cause indoor air quality problems than newer insulation does. It also doesn’t insulate as well, so your HVAC system has to pump more air into your home. If it’s bringing pollutants in with that air, changing your insulation could help this problem, too.
Many of the items used in home improvement, from new carpets to new furniture to some types of drywall, can contain chemicals that will pollute your air. Look for items that are GreenGuard Gold Certified or have another environmental certification indicating that they will not pollute your air.
Get a furnace filter with a higher HEPA rating. This rating indicates how small of particles the filter will remove from your air. A higher number means more particles. Make sure your furnace can handle the filter before you use it. If you need someone to check, give our team a call!
A UV air filtration system kills off bacteria, viruses, mold, mildew, and anything else in your air that is alive. If you find these items in your indoor air, this system will get rid of them for you.
If you only have indoor air quality problems in a single room or a couple of rooms in your home, you might consider a single-room filter. These can scrub the air in the affected rooms and don’t require you to install a whole-home system.
