If your home has hard water, ore water with a high mineral content, you may experience several problems. One of the most significant is hard water stains, which can show up on everything from tile to porcelain and several other surfaces.
At All Hours Plumbing, Heating & Air, we’re here to tell you about the simplest way to rid yourself of these stains: Installing water softener solutions in your home. These will remove the elements in hard water and create a cleaner, smoother water product for your and your family – all while potentially costing you less on your monthly bill as well.
If you haven’t yet installed a softener, however, you need a few basic methods to clean surfaces or appliances of hard water stains if they do crop up. Here are a few we can offer if this is the case for you.
For those looking to avoid using too many abrasive substances or chemicals, this is the simplest format for cleaning hard water stains out of various areas. Simply obtain some baking soda and apply it to the site of the hard water stain, then rub it in with a wetted cloth or sponge. If this cloth or sponge has a bit of coarseness to it, all the better – this will help loosen any stubborn deposits.
This method is the simplest, but also takes the longest and requires the most effort. For some tougher stains, you may have to put in some significant elbow grease to get the job done. At the same time, though, you’re accomplishing this for a low cost and with little hassle.
Another relatively cheap solution is to use a combination of white vinegar from your kitchen and basic water. Mix these up in an even split, then collect them in a spray bottle and spray the stain until it’s covered.
From here, use an abrasive sponge (or a toothbrush for small stains) to scrub the stain out. Know that things will smell a bit strange as you do this due to the vinegar – this is fine, though, and you can worry about odor later once you’ve removed the stain. For all mild or smaller stains, this is the cleaning method we recommend.
For some tougher stains, or if you don’t have much time and need the job done quickly, chemical cleaners are the way to go. It’s important to be careful around these cleaners, which tend to include hydrochloric acid to help break down tough hard water stains. This is a harsh chemical that we don’t recommend exposing yourself to regularly, so only use these products if you have a really difficult stain. In addition, keep the room well-ventilated and wear gloves at all times while using these products.
