Showering Habits to Avoid

We’ve all showered since a young age, and naturally, this makes us pretty comfortable with how we go about this process. Did you realize, though, that certain very common showering habits might be detrimental to both your body and your home’s plumbing system?

Hair in the Drain

Whether or not you’re consciously aware of it, bits of hair will fall from your head and body down to the shower floor as you bathe. A few of these hairs going down the drain each shower may not seem like much, but think about this process over time – after hundreds and hundreds of showers, this hair can easily build up.

This is often what leads to clogged drains in the shower, and the requirement for professional drain cleaning. To head this issue off long before it becomes a problem, though, just invest in a drain cover. These are designed specifically to catch hair and make it easy to clean up without putting it down the drain.

Long, Hot Showers

A long, hot shower might feel wonderful, but it can cause problems to both your body and the shower itself. Longer, hotter showers can cause itchy and dry skin, and they also make the bathroom more likely to develop mold. This is especially true if you like the steam of the hot shower and don’t ventilate the room properly. To avoid these issues, stick to showers in the 5-10 minute range at most.

In addition, hot showers put a lot of strain on water heaters. Especially if your heater is older, try to avoid these kinds of activities.

Leaving the Loofah

If you use a loofah in the shower, be sure to find a different place to keep it when it’s not in use than inside the shower hanging. Keeping the loofah in the wet shower environment will encourage the growth of bacteria, which can lead to mold and issues of cleanliness over time. Instead, rinse your loofah after a shower, wring it dry, and keep it in a safe place with no moisture.
