With the temperatures warming up and spring fully in swing, it’s time to give a little thought to a few plumbing services and maintenance issues. At All Hours Plumbing, Drain Cleaning, Heating & Cooling, our expert technicians have you covered for all the home and commercial plumbing issues you may find at this time of year.
Are there areas of this spring maintenance process you can get started on yourself? Absolutely. Here are a few tips for basic do-it-yourself spring plumbing maintenance.
Especially if it hasn’t been done at all through the cold winter, maintaining drains can make a big difference. For odor blockage, pour a gallon of water down each drain you don’t use that often to loosen any debris. Check under your sinks and in lower areas of the home for any leaks, and if you’re unsure, take a reading on your water meter once before bed and then once again in the morning when you wake up – if the reading is different, you could have a leak issue.
A basic check of drains and gutters in the yard is necessary, mostly to confirm water can flow freely during spring rains. Check all hose bibs and faucets to confirm proper water flow, plus to make sure there were no water-freezing issues that took place over the winter.
A comprehensive check in these areas will include items like faucets, sinks and toilets. You’re checking for leaks or any structural damage. If you’re unsure how to check your toilet for leaks, use a little food coloring in the upper tank – within about 30 minutes, that color will show up in your bowl if you have any leaking problems.
In addition, check flushing capabilities in the toilet to make sure water is being used properly. If there are any mineral deposits on sinks or showerheads, clean them using vinegar and water.
There are several water-related plumbing appliances around the house, including dishwashers, washing machines, water heaters, ice-makers and many others. Check all of these for basic temperature considerations, leaks, sediment and any other signs of aging. In particular, check hoses and connectors for leaks and signs of wear.
