Tips for Pet-Proofing Your Home

If you’re a new pet owner or someone who has been having issues with a pet in the home, there’s a chance plumbing areas are related to this. Pets are naturally curious creatures, and with the combination of water and noise that often accompanies various areas of your home’s plumbing, it makes sense that they’ll get into a few areas they shouldn’t.

Keep Water Around

One of the most common pet issues with plumbing is them drinking water from sources they shouldn’t, namely the toilet. The best way to prevent this? Make sure they aren’t lacking their normal sources of water. Make sure you top off their water bowl several times per day, or basically anytime it looks even moderately empty. They’ll be far less likely to use the toilet as an option if they have others available.

Store Chemicals Properly

One of the biggest pet-related plumbing risks is pets finding plumbing chemicals, consuming them, and getting sick. Ensure all your chemicals and cleaners are securely protected and fully out of reach of any pets at all times.

Cover Open Pipes

Pets, especially dogs, are prone to chew on virtually anything they see that interests them. Exposed pipes are often a prime candidate, and chewing on these can damage both their teeth and the pipes themselves. If you have any open pipe areas, consider basic insulation or other ways to cover them so pets can’t get at them.

Rinse Outside Only

The dirt and muck a pet collects when playing outside are a risk to plumbing. Washing a dog off in the bath, for instance, will shoot tons of dirty and sticky fur down the drain – this could lead to a drain clog very quickly. For hair pets like dogs, do all the cleaning and rinsing outside rather than straining your plumbing.
