How to Avoid Spring Flooding from Snowmelt

Flooding from snowmelt can be a serious issue in Utah, particularly in areas with a lot of snow accumulation during the winter months. We have seen unprecedented amounts of snow this year in and around the Salt Lake City metro area. And, the winter recreational areas in and around Park City have put up numbers they’ve never seen before!

But, with all that snow, we’re destined to have a very wet mud season. And, with higher than normal water levels occurring in short amounts of time due to sudden temperature hikes, we naturally get more Salt Lake City homes flooding.

Here are some steps you can take to help prevent flooding from snowmelt in and around your
home in SLC or the Park City areas:

• Check your Crawl Space: Periodically check your crawl space and other areas that exist under the main ground line for any water build-up or leaks.
• Watch your Windows: Keep an eye on your window wells. If you see water accumulating that could be a sign that the snow melt is running in the wrong direction.
• Check your Sump Pump: If you have a sump pump, make sure it is in good working order before the snow melts. Test it by pouring water into the sump pit to see if it pumps out the water.
• Check your Water Heater: Check your water heater for any signs of leaks or damage. Make sure the pressure relief valve is functioning properly.
• Inspect Gutters and Landscaping: Keep your gutters and the flow of your downspouts free of any obstructions and flowing away from your Salt Lake City home. Additionally, make sure your landscaping is grading properly and away from your property.
• French Drains: Make sure that your French drains are handling current water levels.
